The following modules have been designed to help you build a basic understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Whether you’re completely new to the topic or just looking to strengthen your knowledge, we’ll guide you through what AI is, how it works, and why it matters in everyday life. Our goal is to make AI simple, practical, and accessible—so you can feel confident engaging with it in study, work, and daily life.
The SAIL Framework
The Scaffolded AI Literacy (SAIL) framework is a core resource for the AI literacy aspects of this project. The above resources were built around the Scaffolded AI Literacy (SAIL) Framework, which provides a structured pathway for developing AI literacy in education. The framework emphasises moving beyond simply using AI tools, towards becoming informed, critical, and responsible users of AI.
The framework has four levels of capability. The first three levels focus on building AI literacy, with the last level (level 4+) indicates what further capabilities come beyond AI literacy. The resources have focused on building literacy based on level 1 of the framework
- Know and Understand AI
- Use and Apply AI
- Evaluate and Create AI
- + Beyond AI Literacy
These levels are not age and stage-based. Rather, they provide a scaffolded pathway through levels of competency for all learners. At each level, there are six categories of AI literacy
- The Impacts of AI
- What AI Is and How It Works
- Cognitive Skills
- Applied Skills
- Social, Cultural, and Ethical Issues
- Risks and Mitigations
In addition to detailing the SAIL framework, the document provides illustrative examples of learning activities that can be applied at the three main levels of AI literacy, taking account of different learner audiences.
One of the current activities of this project was to create a version of the framework in te reo Māori
